THE PERFECT CHECKLIST TO PUPPY-PROOFING YOUR HOME

Updated: May 22

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is like bringing home a bundle of boundless energy and insatiable curiosity! However, just as you would baby-proof a home for a toddler, it's crucial to make your living space safe for your new four-legged friend. Puppies, with their natural inclination to explore the world around them, can find themselves in risky situations without the proper precautions in place. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the essential steps of puppy-proofing your home, ensuring that your puppy can play, grow, and learn in a safe and nurturing environment. From securing electrical cords to setting up a cozy puppy zone, get ready to prepare a safe haven that will make your puppy’s transition into your family a smooth and secure one.

Secure Electrical Cords: Bundle up accessible cords or cover them with cord protectors to prevent chewing, which could lead to electrical shock.

Remove Toxic Plants: Many common houseplants are toxic to dogs. Remove plants like lilies, philodendrons, and poinsettias, or place them well out of reach.

Lock Away Cleaning Supplies: Keep all cleaning agents, such as detergents, bleaches, and polishes in a secured cabinet or on a high shelf.

Secure Trash Cans: Use trash cans with secure lids, or keep them inside a latched cabinet to prevent your puppy from getting into something dangerous or messy.

Store Medications Safely: Ensure all medications, vitamins, and supplements are in a secure location that a curious puppy cannot reach.

Remove Small Objects: Puppy-proof areas by removing small items that could be swallowed, such as coins, jewelry, pins, and rubber bands.

Block Off Dangerous Areas: Use baby gates to restrict access to staircases, rooms with fragile items, or areas where the puppy shouldn’t go.

Check for Escape Routes: Ensure there are no small gaps or holes in fences or doors that could be an escape route for a small pup.

Provide Chew Toys: Supply plenty of appropriate chew toys to distract your puppy from nibbling on furniture, shoes, or other household items.

Cover Sharp Edges: Use corner protectors to cover the sharp edges of furniture to prevent injury.

Set Up a Puppy Zone: Create a safe space or crate for your puppy to retreat to when they need rest or when you can’t supervise them directly.

Check Flooring: Ensure all flooring is secure and there are no loose tiles or carpeting that could lead to slips or trips.

Secure Windows: Install sturdy screens or window guards to prevent your puppy from falling out of open windows.

Prepare Food and Water Area: Set up a feeding area that’s easy to clean and away from foot traffic to avoid spills and possible accidents.

Completing this checklist will help create a safer environment for your new puppy, allowing them to explore and grow in their new home without unnecessary risks. You can download and print the PDF checklist to make sure nothing gets missed before the arrival of your puppy.
